Google Wave is on everyone’s mind and everyone wants to get their hand on it and use this awesome system that Google is working on. People have been buying Google wave invite from eBay for as high as $70. So if you have a friend who nominated you from a Google Wave invite or you bought it from eBay or kidnapped a Google employee to get a invite, once you are on Google Wave the first thing that comes to mind is.. Holy Cow.. This is awesome… This thing has so many cool features … What do I do with these features? Do I need these features? I am confused!!
This post has been written with an ordinary Sharma ji in our mind who is currently using email from a long time and suddenly he got his hands on Google Wave. Most of people have been very confused on how Google Wave works. Google has pushed Google Wave as “What Email will be if it was invented today”. Problem with this is that people think Google Wave as an email replacement and in reality its not as simple as that. Google Wave is a very comprehensive system that attempts to combine a number of isolated systems we use separately (to name a few email, instant messaging, social networking, blogging, collaborative writing etc) today. So all these systems put together in one big system will no doubt confuse people. Specially the threaded message management and its tree structure confuses people.
Gina Trapani and Adam Pash from Lifehacker have released the preview edition of “The Complete Guide to Google Wave”. Gina Trapani is the Founding Editor of Lifehacker and Adam Pash is the Editor of Lifehacker.com. The book is available in a PDF edition for you to buy or you can read it online for free. This book will also be released in a soft-cover print in early 2010. You can get more details on the ebook’s website.
Complete Guide to Google Wave – Preview Edition attempts to answer many questions that we have in our minds about Google Wave and successfully does that. So from “What Google Wave is?” to “How it works?” and “How we can use it?” to “How it will be used in future?”, this book covers a lot of ground. Other than that it has some very interesting facts about Wave for example:
Google didn’t choose Wave’s name for the reason you might assume—as a play on the idea of surfing the web. Its engineers were paying homage to writer and director Joss Whedon’s brief but well-loved science fiction TV series, Firefly (2002-2003), and its follow-up film, Serenity (2005). In the Firefly/Serenity universe, characters send textual communications by “wave.” References to waves appear throughout the series and include lines such as “that’s why I waved you,” “just got a wave,” “I can send him a wave,” and “I read your wave.”
In general it increases your understanding of the system that in turn enables you to use Google Wave with maximum effectiveness. In terms of length currently its a 102 page long and you can easily read it in a day or two. The book is written in a way that it is not very technical and can be understood by everyone. Lifehacker is an award-winning daily blog that has a very strong community and while writing the book writers have kept the questions and discussions from the community. Hence it helps in solving a common man’s dilemma.
This book is dived into 8 chapters which are as follows
