Five Years of Firefox: Did you know this about your favorite fox?

On November 9th 2009, Firefox completed 5 years of changing the web and the world. We did a small party to celebrate the event on November 22nd, similar parties are happening all across the world. Firefox has also released a cute little animation on how the browser and the web has evolved. We also set upon the journey to find a little more about our favorite fox. A little trivia follows.

Firefox 5th Birthday 150x150 Five Years of Firefox: Did you know this about your favorite fox?Firefox was not always known as Firefox. Development first started on the Mozilla Browser. Mozilla later turned to Phoenix, which became Firebird. Since, this name created confusion with the Firebired Database servers, the browser was renamed to Firefox. Firebird was renamed into Firefox on February 9, 2004 and Firefox was first released on November 9, 2004.

The Firefox Mascot was not a fox always. It was almost a Red Panda, but finally the Fox prevailed.

Red Pandas are commonly called Firefox.

On June 17, 2008 – Firefox Download Day, Firefox 3 created a Guinness World Record of  8,02,530 Downloads in a day.

Warner Bros released a movie called Firefox, with Clint Eastwood in the title role (he directed the movie as well). It was followed by Atari with a game based on the Movie.
