Nokia E72: Fly Business Class

Nokia E71 was Nokia´s best ever selling QWERTY handset, not just under Business Category but in general. Now comes its successor the Nokia E72, and yet it seems a worthy upgrade. It is only 10mm thick and weighs 128 grams, thinner and lighter than many others available in the market. E72 is a stunning business phone.

The new hardware is what it takes away from any others. The performance is top notch. It has 128MB of RAM. On a fresh boot the phone comes alive in less than 30 seconds (now that’s power-packed performance), and available RAM is about 60MB. It is next to impossible to crash this phone. The phone has 250MB internal memory and 4 GB card is available out-of-the-box. The phone supports up to 16GB card, though.

Nokia E72 (Front View)The E72 retail-box comes with a standard charger a microUSB data cable, a 4GB microSD card and a one piece standard Nokia headset. The box also includes a leather lanyard, a leather carrying case, a branded cleaning cloth and the usual leaflets.

Once out of the box, the cold metallic touch is a nice feel to hands. The front has the gorgeous 2.36″ 16M-color TFT display in landscape mode, followed by the QWERTY keyboard. Sunlight legibility is top notch, nothing to complain here. It is surely among the best of its class.

The back of Nokia E72 is covered mainly of stainless steel. And thankfully it does not attract finger-prints. There is also the 5 megapixel camera present at top centre, with LED flash and a self-portrait mirror. The whole camera module is pretty stylish and looks perfect, although it does not have a camera lens protection cover.

The ergonomics are top notch. And the QWERTY is very nice to work upon. The phone has a 1500 mAh BP-4L Li-Ion battery and is quoted at 576 hours stand-by and 12 hours of talk time.

The new addition to E72 is the track pad. It is as such very useful in camera mode as the phone lacks an actual shutter key. A touch activates the autofocus and locks it, and a full press captures the image. It is also an added luxury when navigating the menus and image gallery.

The telephony and call quality is as expected, top class. The call quality is excellent even in busy cities and it also uses an active noise cancellation algorithm to enhance your in-call experience. The Nokia E72 also has support for VoIP calls. It lets you make emergency calls over Wi-Fi connection even if the cell network is down. Also you can use the accelerometer to silence calls and snooze alarms. It can also operate through PTT (Push to Talk) technology.

Generally a business phone is what it spells, a business phone. The Nokia E72 differs greatly here. It is not just a business phone rather it’s an all rounder. The phone has great all-round Audio performance that can compete with any music handsets available in the market, though you might feel a bit let down by the speaker performance. The phone supports a wide range of audio formats like MP3, AAC, eAAC++ and WMA. It also has stereo FM radio with RDS.

The Nokia E72 does not fail to impress even in imaging segment. The 5 megapixels camera captures photos up to 2592 x 1944 pixels resolution and sports autofocus and an LED flash. The LED can be used as a video light too. The image quality is surely among the best 5MP snappers available. But video recording fails to impress. It only shoots VGA video and that too at 15 fps.

Nokia E72 (Back View)E72 comes preloaded with Font Magnifier, Quick-Office v5 and Adobe Reader 1.5. The Quick-Office app allows editing of documents out of the box. You also get free support for Office 2007 documents.

As pointed out earlier the E72 has everything you’ll ever need when it comes to data transfer.

The email client has a wide range of supports like Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Notes Traveller, Ovi Mail and even Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Windows Live and other POP3/IMAP services available in market. It also includes a lifetime license for Nokia Messaging, Nokia’s mobile email and IM service.

Internet browsing is also a very positive experience. The landscape orientation of the screen makes it even better. The navigation is enhanced by the optical trackpad. Nokia E72 also supports audio streaming (Last.FM) and video streaming (YouTube) sites.

The Nokia E72 has a built-in GPS receiver with Assisted GPS (A-GPS) support. It hardly takes a minute to get the GPS locks form cold start and about 10 seconds on AGPS The Ovi Maps are also preinstalled. Walk navigation is completely free but voice-guided navigation comes at a price. You can also switch off GPS and simply use the map. As you can preload the map content you don’t need any other connection at the time.

To summarize, Nokia E72 is amongst the slimmest QWERTY handsets available on the market. It is definitely the best value for your money. The phone is absolutely a looker and it performs as good as it looks.
