Nikhil (Aftab Shivdasani) belongs to an orthodox Punjabi family who falls in love with a muslim girl Aamna (Aamna Shariff) and wants to marry her but he is not able to reveal this to his parents. His family comprises of a generation gap father, Purshottam (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), his typical housewife mom Seeto (Meenakshi), a spirited grandma Beeji (Dolly Ahluwalia) and an over-enthusiastic uncle Chaddami (Sanjay Mishra) .
As soon as Nikhil comes back from the US, his family starts looking for a bride for Nikhil. So Nikhil takes help of his Father’s friend Hakim Tarachand (Manoj Pahwa) , a sexologist by profession who devises a plan that Nikhil tell his parents that he has fallen in love with an american girl and bring Aamna along with her as her friend. The premeditated idea is to create a conspicuous contrast between the two girls making Nikki, the incompatible bad girl in the family so that Aamna by default gets a comparative clean chit. So Nikhil hires an American girl Nikki (Linda Arsenio) who is applying for Indian citizenship and loves Indian culture.
From here on starts the entire drama. There are no melodramatic scenes. The movie moves at a decent pace. The scenes that stand out in terms of writing-direction and acting are, Aftab’s meeting with a traditional girl at a restaurant, Linda’s first meeting with Aftab’s family and Linda’s bikini scene on the terrace.
As far as performances are concerned, Linda Arsenio deserves a special mention – She has acted her part beautifully. Sanjay mishra, Manoj Pahwa and Kulbhushan Kharbanda have also acted well. Aamna was more of a pretty face. She also needs to work with her dialogue delivery.
The things that work in favor of this comedy is a simple story backed by good individual performances. Situational Comedy scenes and especially the scenes Involving Sanjay mishra (Uncle Chaddami) are quite humourous. However all is not too rosy here. Any romantic-comedy should be backed by good music. But music for Aloo Chat isn’t that good – it only fared average on our charts.
To conclude it is a well made romantic comedy, where humor is not slapstick. It is situational and, I would rather say, it reminded me of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s kind of cinema- A simple story narrated in a sweet manner. Its as Spicy as aloo Chaat , just go and watch it .
