After a lacklustre 2009 for both Bollywood and Movie viewers, there are some interesting movies lined up in 2010. I am here taking a look at few of the most awaited movies. Hopefully, both Bollywood and movie goers emerge victorious with good films and big business in the coming year.
Veer: Veer is an epic love story of a warrior. The film was written by Salman Khan 20 years back and is being directed by Anil Sharma (Gadar Fame). Veer is the bravest warrior in the Pindari tribe of India, who takes on the might of the British Empire to avenge his father’s dishonor and protect his mother land. Sajid-Wajid have provided the movie with melodious music. The movie releases on January 22, 2010.
Ishqiya: The Vishal Bhardwaj touch is evident from the promos but he is not the director, rather his assistant Abhishek Chaubey is directing the movie and VB is the producer and the writer of movie. It is a tale of romance set in UP between individuals caught in a web of crime, suspense, passion and deceit. It stars Naseeruddin Shah, Arshad Warsi and Vidya Balan in the main roles. It is releasing on January 29, 2010.
My Name is Khan: It brings back the most romantic duo of 1990s –Shahrukh Khan and Kajol and is directed By Karan Johar. Shahrukh Khan plays Rizwan Khan who suffers from Asperger’s disease (a kind of Autism) and is married to a Hindu single mother (Kajol). His disability is mistaken for suspicious behavior for which US authorities detain him after which he decides to meet the US president to clear his name. This is by far the most awaited movie of 2010. The global distribution right of this movie are taken by Fox Pictures for Rs. 100 crore – highest for an Indian Movie. The music by Shankar –Ehsaan –Loy has received a mixed response. Release Date: February 12, 2010.
Raavan: Directed by Mani Ratnam, the movie is a modern version of the epic Ramayana where Abhishek Bachchan plays Ravana, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan plays Sita and Vikram (a South Indian actor) plays Ram. It has music by A R Rahman. Release Date: April 2010.
Kites: Producer Rakesh Roshan and Director Anurag Basu Present a love story between an Indian Salsa dance teacher and a Mexican girl played By Barabara Mori. Jay (Hrithik Roshan), Natasha (Barabar Mori), Gina (Kangana Ranaut) form three Edges of this Triangular love story. It is a bilingual movie releasing both in Hindi as well as English. With no release for Hrithik in 2009, this would be the most awaited movie for his fans. Perhaps Hrithik turned down the Prince of Persia for Kites. The movie will release on 14th May 2010.
Housefull: After the super success of Heyy Baby, Sajid Khan is again making his second movie with his favorite actors – Akshay Kumar and Riteish Deshmukh. Arjun Rampal, Deepika Padukone, Lara Dutta, Jiah Khan form the rest of the cast. It is being termed as a Comedy of errors, and is apparently inspired from Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s “Chupke Chupke”. Akshay Kumar and his fans will be hoping that he again start his string of hits with this movie in 2010. Relaese Date: May 20, 2010
Rajneeti: It is a satire on Indian political system and is influenced by the epic Mahabharata and the characters will face similar dilemmas and experiences from Mahabharata. It is directed by Prakash Jha (Director-Gangajal, Apaharan) and stars Katrina Kaif, Ranbir kapoor, Ajay Devgan, Nana Patekar and Arjun Rampal. The Role being played by Katrina Kaif is rumored to be inspired by the life of Mrs Sonia Gandhi. Release date: 28th May 2010.
Action Replay: In 2009, Vipul shah’s London Dreams were shattered badly but this time he comes back with his favourite actor Akshay Kumar. It is a story based on a 1994 Gujarati play with the same name. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan plays the female lead. The movie is based on time travel where an elderly man travels back the time till he is 26 year old. Release date – 2nd half of 2010
Khatta Meetha: Again a Satire on Construction and Road Mafia and also loosely based on the murder of a Bihar PWD engineer. The Film stars Akshay Kumar and Trisha Krishnan (Telgu actress) makes her Bollywood debut with this one. The film brings the successful combo of Akshay Kumar and Priyadarshan (Hera Pheri, Garam Masala, Bhool Bhulaiyya, Bhagam Bhaag and De Dana Dan).
Dhobi Ghat: This will be the directorial venture of Kiran Rao (Aamir Khan’s wife). Not much is known about the movie except the fact that the film will have 4 lead characters and Aamir Khan is one of them as a painter. Prateik Babbar (Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na) also has a major role in the movie. Release Date : 2nd half 2010
Patiala House: After the debacle of Chandni Chowk to China, director Nikhil Advani again casts Akshay Kumar as a male lead opposite Anushka Sharma. It is an emotional drama set in South Hall, revolving around a joint family where the patriarch (Played by Rishi Kapoor) decides the lives and the wants of other family members. The film is loosely based on the infamous 1979 racial riots of South hall. The film is slated to release on Diwali.
Guzaarish: After the debacle of Sawaariya, Sanjay leela Bhansali is set to prove the critics wrong with this one. It stars Hrithik Roshan as parapleigic (Wheel Chair Bound) patient who falls in love with a married nurse (Aishwarya Rai). The movie has drawn comparison with “Who’s life is it anyway?(1981)”, “The Sea Inside (2004)” , “The Prestige (2006)” and “The Painted Veil (2006)”. The director is looking for a Diwali Release.
Tees Maar Khan: Farah Khan chose his close friend Shahrukh’s closest rival for her husband Shirish Kunder’s script Tees Maar Khan. In this movie, Akshay Kumar plays stylish International conman. The search for a female lead is still on but Farah Khan has set Christmas Release for the movie.
There are many more Interesting Movies like Rann, Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge, Golmaal 3 ,Rakta Charita, 3 patti lined up for 2010 with Akshay Kumar doing the maximum movies. I just hope that this year Big Names and Banners don’t disappoint public like they did in 2009.
