Quick Gun Murugan is a western spoof comedy, based on a Popular Channel [V] character created by the director, Shashanka Ghosh, himself and the writer Rajesh Devraj in 1994. The film is an attempt to make a spoof on typical Indian Masala movies of 1970’s and 80’s. It has dramatic visuals, where the villain sprays bullets on our hero, but he would bend sideways with each bullet passing by without hurting him and then the hero would shoot at a lamp, from which it ricochets and kills the villain – Quick Gun is such a movie.
Quick Gun Murugan (Rajendra Prasad) is a sincere South Indian cowboy, who believes that it is his duty to serve and protect. In a small South Indian village, where the villain Rice Plate Reddy (Nasser) is hell bent on turning every Udipi Restaurant into a non-vegetarian establishment, Quick Gun Murugan dies fighting for the cause of Udipi Restaurant owners. Thanks to Murugan’s lifetime of devotion towards vegetarianism, Chitragupta (Vinay Pathak) takes his case on a priority basis and reincarnate sMurugan as himself in metropolitan Mumbai.
Quick Gun Murugan sets out to find his old nemesis Rice plate Reddy now the head Of McDosa Corporation who is abducting all the South Indian mothers to prepare the best Non-vegetarian Dosa in the world. Quick gun is helped by Rice Plate Reddy’s moll Mango Dolly (Rambha), who falls in love with him at first Sight. Now, Quick Gun Murugan finds himself torn between Mango Dolly, and his first love Locket Lover (Anu Menon). Finally, Murugan with the help of his new ally Mango Dolly kills the Reddy and saves the day.
Though the story sounds like a good comedy, having a jab at a lot of contemporary issues, the only good thing about the movie is the performances by each of its cast.
In a spoof, the story and logic take a back-seat, with the sole intention of making a mockery of the original. In my opinion, however, Quick Gun Murugan looses its focus in deciding how much mockery. Over-exaggeration kills the fun of the movie at times. To pull off a satire successfully, the output needs to be funny and entertaining. But, here the jokes were predictable, repetitive and boring.
Despite being a fan of slapstick comedy, I found the movie boring and and unbearable. I hope the director, like his hero – Quick Gun Murugan, would have considered it his duty to protect the viewers from such over-comic torture.
Even though, I don’t have much favorable to speak about the movie, the movie has a decent score of 7.4 at IMDB and did click with a considerable section of the audience. The verdict here ranges in extreme, I leave the final call to you.
