Ram Gopal Verma, in the last few years, has given some of the most atrocious movies despite showing huge promise with movies like Rangeela, Satya and Company in his initial years; With Rann RGV bounces back. It talks about sensationalism and biasedness taking over true and unbiased reporting in the field of media, whose main purpose was to make the public aware of – whether the representatives chosen by them are fulfilling their responsibilty or not and the truth.
Vijay Harshvardhan Malik (Amitabh Bachchan) runs a News Channel India 24×7 and believes that media’s responsibility is to service people by giving them the right news which makes them think. The TRP of India 24×7 is falling, while on the other hand Amrish Kakkar (Mohnish Behl) – who earlier used to work for India 24×7 Has now his own Channel News 24×7 where he believes presentation is more important and one need to sensationalize the news. Purab Shashtri (Riteish Deshmukh) is a budding journalist who idolizes Vijay and is a new joinee in India 24×7.
Jay Malik (Sudeep – Lead actor of Phoonk) is the son of Vijay who is worried about falling TRPs and in his quest to boost the TRPs, he, finally, ends up being the pawn in the hands of the opposition leader Mohan Pandey (Paresh Rawal), who wants to become the PM at every cost. Jay, Mohan Pandey and Naveen Shankalaya (Rajat Kapoor) – an industrialist and Vijay’s son in law conspires against the existing Prime Minsiter and an honest Leader Hudda (KK Raina). Purab unearths the entire conspiracy and finally in his last reporting Vijay Malik exposes the entire scam and asks for forgiveness on waivering from his principles unknowingly.
The background Score has been used brilliantly like “Mera Bharat Mahaan”, when a young budding journalist starts his investigation to unearth the conspiracy and “Kaanch kay Jaise Saaf Usool, Kaanch kay Jaise Toot Gaye”, when Vijay gets to know that he has been used to report false news.
Amitabh Bachchan as an ethical news reporter who hasn’t let the competition and financial problems waiver him from his principles and responsibilty, Sudeep as a person who lets the greed and the lust for power overpower his conscience, Paresh Rawal as a power hungry Politician who is willing to go to any length to get power and position, Rajat Kapoor as a greedy industrialist who wants to beat his brother to become the richest industrialist even at the cost of the country, Mohnish Behl as head of a channel, who is willing to go to any lengths to increase TRPs, and Riteish Deshmukh as a budding journalist, who feels that truth is always revealed forms the perfect cast for this movie.
Rann moves at fine pace and is on track for most of the times, which makes it impactfull. The movie shows battles at a macro level between people who listen to the voice of their conscience and the people whose conscience is dead and at an Individual level a battle between righteousness and greed & power, which makes them either honestly fulfill their responsibilties or just avoid their responsibilities. The monologue by Amitabh Bachchan is thought provoking.
This one will be a treat for people craving for serious cinema. Go and watch out in Cinemas RGV’s best work since Company.
