Surrogates is a movie that hardly comes by. Set in a futuristic date when robot bodies can be controlled by human beings using their brains, Surrogates follows the lives of us humans who have become mere operators of these surrogate bodies that live, move and work for them. A good science fiction action movie, with immense digital wizardry but a poor plot. The movie is directed by Joanathan Mostow (of Terminator 3 fame), with the screenplay by the duo who wrote Terminator 3 and 4. Alas, Surrogates is as a dud as Terminator 3/4.

The movie follows the story of a cop (Bruce Willis) who is forced to leave his isolated home life to investigate a series of murders of Surrogates and their human hosts. Life goes on as usual for Willis’ character till the son of the inventor of the Surrogates is killed with an unknown weapon. Willis, then, discovers that this weapon is capable of killing the operating human by killing the surrogates themselves. The movie goes through expected plot twists, terminator style robot chases, some emotion, anti-surrogate rebels, an utterly unexploited Ving Rhames and maybe saving humanity once or twice.
Even with a good cast and experienced people behind the film, it fails to deliver. The plot had very good possibilities that are left unexploited, scratching only the surface you are left with an average action flick which can be a good time killer. Unless you really have nothing to do and want to watch it on the big screen, go ahead and do so. But otherwise this movie could wait till it comes on HBO.
