Windows has always been a very popular operating system. Primarily because of the program support it enjoys. With the latest in technology, the capacity to use and store these programs and data has increased manifold. When I first purchased a computer back in 1998, I had a 21GB Hard Disk Drive. Today, my 1TB Drive falls short for my requirements. There is so much to store and so much to use. True. But there is also so much redundancy in our data. Multiple copies of the same song, all sorts of clips downloaded from the Internet, documents we never need again and stuff. All this junk keeps lying scattered around on the storage medium. With all the advancements that Windows 7 has come with, there is nothing to help the user keep such a simple thing in check. This is where WinDirStat comes into play.

WinDirStat is a disk usage statistics viewer and cleanup tool for Microsoft Windows (all variants). It reads the whole directory tree and presents it in three views – directory list, treemap and extension list. The directory list lists the folders similar to the Windows Explorer, sorted by file size. The Tree Map shows the directory tree. Extension List displays statistics on the basis of file types. Using WinDirStat, you can see what is utilising the most space immediately. A nifty way to get rid of all junk.
Download WinDirStat from the WinDirStat website. WinDirStat is a free software published under the GNU General Public License. You can also download the source of the software and modify and share it.
